It's All Downhill Now

Why is it so hard to lose weight when you are over 40? I’ll be honest with you - as women over 40 we are pretty much ‘up against it’ when it comes to gaining or losing body fat. I understand! I am 56 and if I don't eat and exercise according to my DNA then I am suffering from weight gain, inflammation, belly fat, joints hurting and so much more.

Having the obesity gene and the addictive tendencies gene........If I so much as look at a cake I gain weight. Or that’s what it feels like doesn’t it? The other day I let it all hang out with a Sunday lunch with my family and then a dessert. I do not normally eat these things on a regular basis. In fact, it is very rare. But low and behold the next day my body had swelled and I could see I literally looked bigger and my jeans - woah I could barely do them up. That cannot be real after one meal off plan - can it? The answer is, No. One meal did not set me back, that was water retention and it quickly subsided in a day or two once I got back on track. But it does demonstrate how our body is very sensitive to sugar and refined carbs. So why have you gained so much weight as you age? You have stored belly fat around your midsection because of your decreasing levels of hormones and your body’s response is to try to produce more estrogen. It does this by making and storing fat around your belly. No amount of cardio or dieting will change this. In fact, it will increase it. Has this happened to you? It happened to me, although I lost weight on the scale I was storing fat around my midsection, this is why the scale is not the best indicator of health. Here is me....at 52 wondering what the heck is happening! Menopause had hit and I was losing ground with my compostion! I was gaining on my hips and around my belly. This was so frustrating! BUT.......I found out I was NOT following my unique BLUEPRINT.

This is what I did.

  1. I took a HIPAA compliant DNA test.

  2. I followed the complete protocol designed just for me from the 46 page report.

  3. I stayed consistent with my efforts.

  4. I enjoyed life when it presented itself.

  5. I spent time understanding how my unique body works.

And BOOM! It worked!!! Following my DNA worked! Just look at my transformation pics below!

From here I went on to continue changing my composition to this:

Improving your body composition is VERY different from weight loss. I’m not talking about losing weight on the scale alone because if that is done incorrectly you will damage your metabolism, lose muscle and struggle to lose that midlife belly that you are so wanting to get rid of! Retaining fat around our midsection and thighs can happen when we adopt the diet mentality...eat less, workout more. It is a train wreck waiting to happen. When we are doing this coupled with not enough sleep, excessive stress and not following our DNA but instead doing what our neighbor is doing our health becomes compromised. Many coaches will say it's simply ‘calories in versus calories out’ so reducing your calories and increasing your activity. But weight loss for women over 40 is far more nuanced than that. I understand this not only because I coach women of this age, but because of what has happened with my own body. That’s why when I coach women on a one-to-one basis I work with them according to their DNA. It's important that you are following YOUR BLUEPRINT.
